Daryl Davis handed in his resignation as Thorsby’s football coach effective immediately, the Chilton County Board of Education reported Tuesday.
BOE accepted the resignations of Davis and maintenance employee Bobby Gore during their regular meeting. Gore’s resignation is effective Jan. 1.
In other business, Howard Daugherty was named board president and Ann Glasscock vice president for 2008-09 by majority vote.
Both Daugherty and former president Curtis Smith were nominated for the position of president. The new officials took their positions immediately.
The board also:
• approved distributing December payroll checks on Dec. 29
• hired Macy McGriff as an extended-day aide at Jemison Elementary School, and hired Bonnie Daniels as a cafeteria assistant at Chilton County High School
• granted Lee Mehler permission to tear down an old house located on property adjacent to Verbena School recently purchased by the board
• granted permission for Chilton County Education Association members to attend the AEA Delegate Assembly in Montgomery on Dec. 4-6.

I am sad to see Mr. Davis resign as Football Coach......NOT! Now if we could just get him to encourage some of his other lazy counterparts to follow him. My experience with this school has been nothing but negative. You have too many married "couples" ruling the school with their own agendas. They do nothing but whine about how the other schools in the county get the attention and dollars of our county, but until this school proves they deserve positive recognition then stop complaining. Hats off to Thorsby and good luck with future athletics.....

I think, chiltonchic, that you shouldn't insult the school on a personal opinion on these 'couples'. These 'couples' as you choose to call them, are 100% supportive of the students, and many turn to these people for advice. The school is apparently doing something right since they continue to grow and grow every year. Thorsby has a sense of pride about itself, support from teachers you don't find many places, and I do believe they deserve a positive recognition. I don't believe its right to insult the entire school on an opinion about a few people.
Good luck Coach Davis. You are a great guy who supported his players, and you don't find that a lot!

Well spoken thsgrad...I have two THS grads of my own and am very proud of the education they both received. One has graduated from college with honors and the youngest is well on her way to a college degree of her own - with plans of returning home to teach and mentor just the was she was at Thorsby.

I am also sad to see Coach Davis leave, but wish him the best. I have nothing but good to say about Thorsby and their married "couples" ruling the school. Their agendas just happen to be in the best interest of our children. I have THS grad of my own and also a Jr. High student and am thankful everyday that we have such a wonderful, caring school in our community. If chiltonchic would just pick up the newspaper or turn on the daily news and hear some of the problems that other school systems face, I think she might change her tune. I would like to say thank you to Daryl Davis and every other principal, office personnel, janitorial staff, nurse, teacher or coach who continue to make a difference in the lives of our children.

Again, Thorsby could only hope for at best a football season where they defeated maybe 2 or 3 local teams at best...maybe the next coach can field a better team.

shannon- I have to agree with you on this one...Thorsby's teams have always struggled to have a winning season- and maybe this will benefit the school also

The point that I would like to get across is that it stinks for the students at Thorsby that have talent and will never have a chance of getting any type of scholarship (athletic or academic) because of the poor leadership at Thorsby. I happen to know first hand that Thorsby has had a lot of talent pass through and the coaches there didn't know what to do with it.......the trend continues. As far as the "married couples" comment.....how does a Principal or Vice Principal manage to discipline his own wife when issues arise at work? This doesn't happen in the corporate world. Businesses don't allow spouses to supervise each other. This only makes it hard for "non-related" parties to have representation.

Maybe some of the problem with a winning season is the way they are being coached but you can't blame a losing season ALL on the coaches. Thorsby has had winning seasons in the past, although it has been a while. Possibly they need to look at all aspects for example the program, the way the players are picked, coaching techniques, the ability of the players, etc. No program is perfect and there is always room for improvement. I would venture to guess that these coaches don't like losing just as much as the kids don't like losing.
As far as the married couples, I see your point, however it's never affected me directly. I know Thorsby has several couples but the MAJORITY of Thorsby's teachers do care about the students and do have their best interests at heart. I think that we are fortunate to have such a good school.
QUOTE FROM CHILTONCHIC77: They do nothing but whine about how the other schools in the county get the attention and dollars of our county, but until this school proves they deserve positive recognition then stop complaining.
PARENTS ALONG WITH TEACHERS "WHINE" ABOUT THIS BECAUSE THIS IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING AND HAS FOR THE PAST SEVERAL YEARS. Thorsby is in desperate need of a school and yet we see other schools building and getting funding to do things, in the meanwhile our kids are cramped into one school that it outgrew 5 years ago. It's time to BUILD, plain and simple. Thorsby should have a school built now, those kids have had to wait long enough. It is a FACT that Thorsby's needs are often put on the backburner for some reason. Thorsby deserves the same funding that all of the other schools get and for some reason they seem to have to fight to get things from this county. That just isn't right. They are not alone there are other schools in the system that have the same problem. I don't know what the problem is whether it's how it's being presented or what BUT I DO KNOW THAT IT'S A PROBLEM AND IT'S REAL AND IT'S HAPPENING.
Thorsby gets a lot of POSITIVE recognition and they have some great teachers and students. Look at the SKIP program, it's a great program that Thorsby started. Sure you have bad apples, they are in all schools. Those teachers know who they are and they know they are not there for the kids like they are suppose to be.

As for discipline, it is carried out all the same. The couples don't run around together, they respect the authority. Never once did I hear them call each other by their first name to students, or even in front of students. They don't "rule the school". They don't try to rule the school. And you even rarely see them together! So are you going to punish someone the students feel comfortable, safe, and love to be around? That seems great.
There is a bond at Thorsby High School with ALL teachers and students. We didn't view them as 'The couples'. We viewed them as our teachers. And they are disciplined the same as any other teacher. All teachers support one another 100%. And I, as a recent graduate, loved having them as my teachers. They actually made learning enjoyable. I'm sorry if that isn't enough.
As for the football program this year, there were many many players who were new and did not have a lot of experience. Its called growing and learning. I played for the school in a couple programs, and you know what? We didn't have a winning season in basketball for a couple of years but we had a blast. We had fun. And we have remembered the fun and bond we share to this day. THAT alone should be what it is about. Sure, a winning season is great, but what is the use if you don't have a good time? I don't see it. I think we should think about the STUDENTS. If they are happy, THAT should be enough.

thsgrad08.........I can tell you are young and naive. I'm sure when you have children of your own and have paid taxes for twenty years your view will be different. I'm glad that your experiences at THS were good, but some students don't have the luxury of school just being about fun. Some students strive to do well in school as a resource to get them into college. We have other schools in this county that are able to fund similar programs and produce scholars and athletes...I'm not sure why Thorsby can't do the same. As a parent, I'm not looking for my kids to just be happy at school. They would be ecstatic if they were able to go and hang out with their friends all day and watch movies at school. I want them to get an education and receive the foundation that is necessary for them to succeed in life. Competition is part of the foundation. We compete in every aspect of life. Nobody should have to settle for mediocrity. We as taxpayers and parents have expectations we place on all of our schools here in the county. You will understand this one day.

So you are saying because I am young I understand nothing. I'm IN college. So you can't have fun and go to school? I did strive to do well in school as do the majority of students that go to this school. I see this more as a personal grudge against certain people and the school more than a look at the bigger picture. Wow, just because a large portion of students who went to this school go to college, I guess that doesn't mean anything.
So I may be young, but I am not naive. If it hadn't been for the help of the counselors, and the teachers who gave us the recommendations we needed to get scholarships, education, and what we needed for college, many of us couldn't have gotten into college because of financial reasons. So I understand perfectly the struggles.
I think I just know a little more about what goes on that what some claim they do.

Thanks for your insights thsgrad08 ... my son went to Thorsby and I was always pleased with the school.

I also am an alumni of THS. It is not correct to represent that if you attend a school like Thorsby you cannot excel in academics or athletics. There are many examples directly from THS itself that disprove this theory. There have been many graduates from Thorsby that have received academic and or athletic scholarships after their tenure at THS. If you look at it per capita it may be one of the highest in this county. It is unequivocally incorrect to make a blanket statement such as chiltonchic77's "students at Thorsby that have talent and will never have a chance of getting any type of scholarship (athletic or academic)". This is false. I am one that received both as well as a merit scholarship. THS has had many physicians, lawyers, and other upper level white collar graduates as well as students that have attended colleges from Wallace to Harvard. I appreciate the opportunity that is provided at Thorsby and the leadership that has been exhibited throughout the past several years by the current staff. Disciplined individuals create their own opportunity. They do not rely on the crutch of society to provide it for them through programs and processes. It requires work to excel. Chiltonchik77 may be looking for someone to blame because of her own inability.

I am sad to see Mr. Davis go. He was a very nice guy. But the football team just had a very off year. The players are not very muscular unlike other football teams. But Thorsby is a small school so they have to get as many players as they can.
But about the teachers married to each other has never really been a problem. I have also recently graduated and I love the school. It was small and everyone got along with each other and you knew everyone. But the education was not very good. I knew, after I was a sophomore that I wasn’t prepared for college. I have also heard many people say the same thing. But you can do great in college its just you have to learn what you should have learned in school.
Also Mr. Bryan has allowed some GREAT teachers to leave There are few teachers there that are wonderful and would do anything to help the students. And he kept teachers that are incapable of teaching, and who pick favorites and should be fired because they do not teach at all.
Also Thorsby needs a new school. You can only add on to the main building for so long until there is no more room on the property. Thorsby can grow and become a large school it just needs room for it.

Let me assure THSALUM that I'm not looking to blame anyone for my inabilities. I am a graduate of Chilton County High School where I received a full scholarship and earned my Bachelors Degree with honors. I also received my MBA back in 2005. This is not about my inabilities, but my expectations as an educated citizen of this county for my children and others to have those same opportunities. I'd love to see any statistics you may have backing up your claim that Thorsby High School produces more college graduates on a per capita basis than any other school in the county. That is a false statement. I do agree that individuals can excel through their own hard work, however it is the responsiblity of these educators to provide these opportunities for students through strong programs. That is exactly the problem as I see it. We are not holding teachers accountable. I agree that we do have a few good teachers that are teaching for the right reason, but by far the majority see it as a part time job with summers off.

I hate to read these things and see how negative some of these comments are. If all of the people who have comments on here spent as much time supporting there school and teachers as they do bringing it down they might could get some changes. I graduated several years ago, and i have seen changes, some good and some bad. Of course some of them were bad, but you sometimes have to learn by your mistakes. THS grad 08 is very wise and apparently was taught something in school , because she is standing up for her school and what she believes in. Thorsby has produce many professionals including several Dr, Lawyers, business women and men and numerous teachers , that love coming back to the school to start there careers. I feel like if they thought it was so bad they would have chosen somewhere else to teach. If you were to look at every teacher in Thorsby most of them graduated there and are doing what we should all do ,and that is GIVE BACK! There are alot of husband/wife couples there and yes some might be a problem but I do not see mr davis and his wife being one of them. His wife was a awesome kindergartin teachers and has since moved to a older class. She is great with those kids and I only pray that my child will get to be in her class one day. When you live in a small town this is what happens. If chiltonchik77 does not like this school, and has that many problems with it then why are you sending your child there. The last time I checked Thorsby is the only school on a enrollment freeze. So she should have no problems going somewhere else.

I have nothing but great things to say about THS. Great school with great teachers, willing to help in any way they can. Coach- sad to see you go. Players- Enjoy every moment while you can and always leave everything on the field with no regrets. It takes hard work to make it to the top and A CHAIN IS ONLY IS STRONG AS ITS WEAKEST LINK. GOOD LUCK.

To say the least, I am proud to be from Thorsby. Many people are. If it were such a bad place where no education was given, there would not be as many students enrolling and not leaving as there are. Students can't enroll themselves, so parents must see something they like. If you don't want your children in Thorsby because you believe it isn't being run right or they aren't getting the education you want, there might just be a simple solution. Enroll them in another school. I believe many students received a wonderful education, and I've seen many people before me succeed in far more than anyone expected. I believe Thorsby teachers deserve credit. Its not everyday you can actually sit and talk to a teacher and get an education.
So I am very proud of Thorsby. So they had an off year? About four years ago the football team made it to the second round of state playoffs, and no one was complaining then. Athletics have their ups and downs. Wasn't Auburn on top last year, and Alabama losing? So give it time. You never know what's going to happen.

I cannot believe that people would have the nerve to sit here and write complaints, WHEN PEOPLE we don't even have a P.T.A. My goodness, look at all the good that you could be doing for these kids. For the time that it took you to write a complaint and argue back and forth you could have raised money for your child's room. Yes I do think there needs to be some changes, and I do think that adminstration could work harder for Thorsby. But the parents should get involved and help the children get what they need. After you do this then you will have the right to say, Hey why dont we recieve the help we need. So Either put up and help the kids or just sit back and wait and wait and wait to see if someone can complain long enough to get something done. Also a small school somtime is a lot better than large one. I know I work in a large school system, but they do have parents that will get in and see that the children have what they need to get a better education. When we see "better school systems" it's not because the state gives it to them, its because the parents, grand-parents and families are willing to work. O my did I say "work", yes I did. So before we work on our principals, teachers, etc....go get involved so you will have a legal complaint.

I think this thread has digressed. THS has great teachers. Why was their marital status even brought up? The topic here is Coach Davis resigning. I hate to hear that, but just know that it takes a great amount of courage to see a bad season through. My hat's of to Coach Davis for keeping his chin up and standing by the players all season long. And, thankfully, we live in a county that basically allows us to choose what school our kids attend. If you don't like the education your kids are getting at Thorsby, then there are several other schools that will be happy to have them.
