Friendly competition: 4 locals race in same class at Speedway
Published Wednesday, November 11, 2009
Thanks to an investment by two local men, four local racecar drivers have had a season to remember.
The closing of the Birmingham International Raceway one year ago put Justin Caton, Tyler Caton, Bobby Knox Jr. and Chase Knox out of a place to race.
But brothers Bobby Knox Sr. and Mark Knox, Chase’s father, purchased and reopened the Montgomery Motor Speedway, allowing the four local drivers—and friends—to have a season to remember.
“It’s really been convenient having a racetrack 40 minutes away,” Chase Knox said.
Knox is the oldest of the four at 26. Both Catons, who like the Knoxes are cousins, are 20. Bobby Knox Jr. is 15.
All race Pro Late Model cars.
Chase Knox and Tyler Caton have raced together before this past season, which ended with a race on Nov. 7. Races at the Speedway will begin again in the spring.
“All of us are excited about next year,” Justin Caton said.

So, how was this a worthy story for the sports section? Appears to be a story of how "Daddy has got funds". If I remember correctly this is how the Chilton County Dragway got its start also. Maybe what Daddy should have done was bought JR. a truck and trailor and then he could drag his equipment from race to race and learn what racing is truely all about. Then had the Fabulous four seceeded at racing we as readers would have had a newsworthy story to read.

I agree with kw. You can tell when people are jealous. As far as Chase. He was with the wrong people at the wrong time. If you knew the whole story then you would understand. Also Bobby and Mark have worked hard for many years to accomplish what they currently have. They took a small business in clanton that was left to them by Barney and went to shelby county and took out million dollar loans to build Shelby. It was a gamble and it paid off.
