Thanks for keeping lake clean

Published Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Lake Mitchell is one of Chilton County’s greatest resources, and we should treat is as such.

Thankfully, we have a group of people that are willing to volunteer their time and effort to clean up the lake. The annual Lake Mitchell cleanup will be held from 8 a.m. until noon Saturday at Higgins Ferry Park.

The event is sponsored by the Lake Mitchell Homeowners and Boat Owners Association and is part of Alabama Power’s Renew Our Rivers campaign.

Many of us enjoy the river, but too many of us are too willing to just discard our trash without thinking about where it ends up. Well, it ends up piling up on the shore, ruining everyone’s experience, whether fishing or boating.

And if no one comes by to pick it up, the trash just stays there. Last year’s clean up removed three tons of trash from the lake, HOBO director Steve Miles said.

“It keeps it nice and clean...that’s our purpose,” said Miles. “You don’t have any trash floating around. It’s something we want to take care of and safeguard for our children’s future.”

All who volunteer Saturday will deserve a big “thank you”—in addition to the free picnic lunch.
