Show teams more support

Published Monday, September 14, 2009

Dear Editor

A winning season, a newly refurbished gymnasium, players who are talented, determined and excited.

What more could a proud parent of a Lady Rebel volleyball player want?

As I sat and watched our ladies continue their winning streak, I realized how disappointed I was that not one administrator, teacher or representative of the town, most of whom actually played basketball in that very gym when it was new, was there to see it.

These girls have worked hard in workouts in the off-season, practiced until they are black and blue, leaving a piece of themselves on that court every time they play, all to make a community proud, and yet no one seems to care enough about it to spend $4 and an hour out of their time to support the kids who are giving everything they have to their school and their community.

Our kids today face a lot of challenges and adversity, and these ladies have found something they love.

We say we worry about our kids, who they are with and what they do when we aren’t around.

Well, what happens when we aren’t around to let them know we support them and are proud of them? I know volleyball isn’t the social scene of the Friday night football game, but would it really hurt that much to come out and watch them play?

I am ashamed of the school and the community I have lived in and been a part of for 22 years.

Maybe you should see the looks on those faces when they come running out of the locker room with music playing and they realize the gym is empty.

How can we expect them to be fired up and play great volleyball when no one is there to see it?

Let’s show our kids that we are glad they aren’t on the streets, drinking and doing drugs, and that we are proud of their accomplishments, on and off the court.

We owe a big thanks to Ginger and Keith Williams for believing in our kids and giving their time to them.

It is time our community shows its thanks as well. Come watch our next game and cheer for our Lady Rebels.

They deserve it!

Way to go Mrs. Amy!!! I have been to only 2 games this year, but i was shocked to see no one there! This has been the best year the volleyball team has ever had! But i am not surprised, the administrators hardly show support to the volleyball team. I do know that Mr. Sheffield has showed the most support! But, everyone should go see how well they are doing now! Also, FYI the have now beaten 2 County TEAMS!!

I have had the same thing on my mind for a while now so thank you for speaking out. I graduated from MHS where no matter what sport was being played the community, family, friends, and school always came out to cheer & support the team first and socialize second. It appears to make a difference in whatever team sport it might be to look over and see the faith, support, & confidence that your community, family, friends, and above all your school has in you & your team. I am now a proud Thorsby Rebel fan and mom & glady hold my head high with pride when I say my daughter is a Lady Rebel. I have not gotten to attend all the games but most of them constantly cheering the Lady Rebels on. If anyone knew what dedication these young ladies have, and how hard they have worked they would respect them enough to attend just 1 game. Respect is something that you earn and I can honestly say that the Lady Rebels have earned my respect and admiration. To Ginger & Keith Williams Thank You! I am thankful that you not only care about these kids on the court but off the court you care about education, morals, and everything else that matters to a parent. My little one is already ready to sign up for some Lady Rebel Volleyball! Keep up the good work Ladies looking forward to cheering you on. Go Rebels!

A little off topic but.... admission should be equal for all sports. This admission cost should be $3 and no charging for parking at football games! If a family of four wanted to attend a Friday night football game it would cost:

Parking "donation"- $2

Admission- $6 times 4 people- $24

Program $3

Raffle tickets $2 (Strategically set up at the admission gate so that before you can put your change up they ask for you to buy a ticket!)

Concession Stand ($4 each) = $12

Grand Total $43.00

This may seem minimal to some folks, but to a lot of families this is grocery money for three days.

As I said I am a PROUD Thorsby fan & I agree that regardless if they win or loose they need our support. Support and spirit are not the same thing, I do think that the Rebels have spirit. It doesn't matter if you know anyone on any team if anything just go to support the school. The point is that the Lady Rebels are getting very little support! I could take a picture & put it in the paper but why don't you just come to the game to see how empty the gym is and the lack of support that the Lady Rebels receive from the community and the school. While you are at the game cheer them on to a victory. No one has had to write into the newspaper to try to rally support for the football team! Oh and admission into the volleyball game is $3 or $4 per person and then whatever you may need for the concession stand. No charge for parking donations and no programs being sold. GO LADY REBELS!
